What makes a typing test hard
Hard difficulty typing tests use sophisticated vocabulary, complex sentence structures, longer sentences, and heavier punctuation including semicolons, colons, em-dashes, and parentheses. The passages draw from academic writing, technical manuals, legal documents, and literary prose â exactly the kind of text a legal secretary, academic editor, or medical transcriptionist encounters daily.
The challenge isn't just reading unfamiliar words. It's maintaining the same finger patterns when the text no longer flows as predictably. On easy and medium text, experienced typists partially anticipate the next word. Hard text removes that advantage, forcing true reactive typing.
When to move to hard difficulty
Move from medium to hard when you consistently score 65+ WPM with 95%+ accuracy on medium text. Pushing to hard before that point will mostly reinforce error habits rather than building speed. Once you can maintain 60 WPM with 93%+ accuracy on hard text, your medium-difficulty speed will have climbed substantially â typically to 75â85 WPM â because hard text has trained your reactive typing without the comfort of predictable vocabulary.
