Stenographer typing test requirements in India
Stenographer posts in central and state governments are among the most sought-after clerical positions because of the higher pay grade and interesting work. SSC Stenographer Grade C and D recruitment, High Court Stenographer posts, and departmental steno-typist positions all require a two-part skill test: transcription from shorthand dictation and plain typing speed.
For the typing component of SSC Stenographer Grade D, candidates must type at 50 WPM in English or 65 WPM in Hindi. For Grade C (higher post), the requirement increases to 100 WPM in English or 65 WPM in Hindi — note that Grade C requires stenographic skill at 100 WPM shorthand dictation speed, not plain typing at that rate.
Building stenographer-level typing speed
Achieving 50 WPM in plain English typing (required for SSC Steno Grade D) requires consistent practice over 3–4 months for most beginners. Start with the easy 5-minute test to establish clean technique, then progress to medium difficulty. Once you reach 45 WPM on medium with 95%+ accuracy, you are close to the Grade D requirement.
For Grade C requirements in Hindi at 65 WPM, regular Hindi typing practice using the Mangal InScript keyboard layout is essential. The Hindi Typing Test section of TypingMonk provides structured Hindi practice with real-time KDPH measurement — use the 5-minute and 10-minute formats specifically, as these match the SSC steno examination duration.
