Employment and Social Development Canada is one of the largest federal departments by program expenditure and citizen interactions, responsible for administering a wide range of federal labour, social, and employment programs that collectively touch the lives of millions of Canadians at critical moments in their personal and working lives. The department administers Employment Insurance, which provides temporary income replacement to Canadians who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own or who need to take leave for specific life events, the Canada Pension Plan through which workers and their employers contribute throughout their working lives to a contributory pension that provides retirement, disability, and survivor benefits, Old Age Security which provides a universal monthly benefit to Canadians aged sixty-five and over funded from general tax revenues, the Canada Child Benefit which provides monthly tax-free payments to eligible families based on their income and number of children, and various skills training, labour market, and social development programs delivered through agreements with provinces and territories and through direct grant and contribution programs with organisations that serve workers, students, and vulnerable populations. Service Canada delivery points across the country, including over six hundred physical offices in communities from coast to coast, supplemented by telephone service centres, the My Service Canada Account online portal, and assisted service kiosks, provide Canadians with access to the full range of Employment and Social Development Canada programs through their preferred service channel. Administrative staff in Service Canada offices process new applications, verify eligibility criteria, enter data into program management systems, prepare and dispatch correspondence communicating award, denial, or request for information decisions to applicants, process appeals and reconsideration requests, and respond to telephone and in-person inquiries from Canadians who need assistance understanding their benefits, reporting requirements, or the status of their applications.
