The development of national highway infrastructure in Madhya Pradesh has been a transformative driver of economic growth, connectivity, and regional development in a landlocked state that depends almost entirely on road transport for the movement of goods and people between its dispersed cities, towns, and rural areas. Madhya Pradesh, being the geographical heart of India, is crossed by several major national highway corridors that connect the north with the south and the east with the west, making it a critical transit state for long-distance road freight and passenger movement. The National Highway Authority of India, under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, has been implementing the major expansion and improvement of national highways in Madhya Pradesh through programmes including the National Highway Development Project, Bharatmala Pariyojana, and state-specific corridor projects. The NH 44, which runs from Srinagar in the north to Kanyakumari in the south and passes through Bhopal, is one of the most important north-south corridors through the state. The NH 12 and NH 46 connect major cities of the state with each other and with adjacent states. The Bharatmala Phase 1 programme has identified several economic corridor and ring road projects in Madhya Pradesh for construction, including the Rewa-Katni corridor, the Bhopal ring road, and the Indore-Gwalior economic corridor. The expansion of four-lane and six-lane highways has reduced travel times between major cities, improved road safety by separating opposing traffic flows, and enabled higher average speeds for both freight and passenger vehicles. Highway development projects in Madhya Pradesh are implemented predominantly on the hybrid annuity model or Engineering, Procurement and Construction contract basis, with the National Highway Authority of India as the project authority. Land acquisition for highway expansion is carried out under the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act of 2013, which prescribes compensation at market value and mandates social impact assessment and rehabilitation for displaced families. The state Public Works Department manages state highways and major district roads, and these networks are being upgraded under state government investment programmes and the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, which provides connectivity to unconnected habitations in rural areas. Madhya Pradesh has also invested in wayside amenities on national highways through the development of truck parking complexes, highway patrol infrastructure, and trauma care facilities at regular intervals to improve safety and the driving experience. The development of logistics parks and freight villages at strategic locations along major national highway corridors in Madhya Pradesh supports the growth of manufacturing and warehousing investment in the state.
