The economy of Rajasthan, historically shaped by the twin pillars of trade along the great caravan routes connecting Central Asia, the Levant, and the ports of Gujarat with the cities of the Gangetic plain, and agriculture in the more fertile eastern and southeastern districts of the state, has diversified substantially in the contemporary period to encompass tourism, handicrafts, mining and mineral processing, industrial manufacturing, renewable energy, and a rapidly growing services sector that is transforming the economic profile of major cities like Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Kota, Ajmer, and Bikaner. The state is the country's most important producer of zinc and lead concentrates from the massive underground mines operated by Hindustan Zinc Limited at Rampura Agucha, Sindesar Khurd, and Rajpura Dariba in the Bhilwara and Rajsamand districts, which together constitute one of the largest vertically integrated zinc production complexes in the world and also produce significant quantities of silver as a by-product of the zinc and lead smelting process. Dimensional stone quarrying and processing is another major industry, with Rajasthan accounting for a dominant share of national production of marble, particularly from the quarries around Makrana in Nagaur district whose white crystalline marble has been prized since the Mughal period and was used in the construction of the Taj Mahal, the Jama Masjid in Delhi, and numerous other historic buildings, as well as sandstone from Jodhpur, Bharatpur, and Dholpur, granite from Jalore, Sirohi, and Ajmer, and serpentine from Dungarpur. The gem and jewellery industry concentrated in Jaipur is of national and international significance, employing a large number of skilled artisans in the cutting, faceting, and polishing of precious and semi-precious gemstones including emeralds, rubies, sapphires, and diamonds imported from global mining centres, and in the creation of finished jewellery in traditional Rajasthani and international styles that are exported to markets across North America, Europe, East Asia, and the Middle East. Rajasthan's handloom and handicraft sector, which sustains the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of artisans in both urban workshops and rural homes, produces a diverse and distinctive range of products including block-printed cotton and silk textiles from Sanganer, Bagru, and Barmer, resist-dyed bandhani fabrics from Sikar, Jaipur, and Jodhpur, intricately embroidered garments and household textiles from Jaisalmer, Barmer, and Churu, Kota Doria woven fabric from Kota, blue pottery using Persian-derived techniques from Jaipur, leather footwear and bags from Jodhpur and Jaipur, lac bangles from several centres, and miniature paintings in the Bundi, Kishangarh, Bikaner, and Jaipur styles that are sought after by domestic and international collectors. The renewable energy sector, capitalising on Rajasthan's exceptional solar irradiance levels and significant wind energy potential particularly in the Jaisalmer, Barmer, Jodhpur, and Bikaner districts, has emerged as one of the most dynamic growth sectors in the state's economy. The Bhadla Solar Park in the Jodhpur district, spanning several thousand hectares of barren desert land, has a commissioned capacity of over two thousand megawatts and has been developed through competitive tariff-based auctions that have established some of the world's lowest solar energy tariff benchmarks, demonstrating that India's desert regions can produce clean solar electricity at a cost competitive with coal-fired power. The state government has proactively developed wind power zones along the Aravalli ranges and in the Jaisalmer and Barmer deserts, attracting investments from major wind energy developers that have installed several thousand megawatts of wind generation capacity. The combined renewable energy capacity of Rajasthan, including both solar and wind installations, positions it among the leading states in India's clean energy transition and a major contributor to the national target of achieving five hundred gigawatts of installed renewable capacity by 2030. The Invest Rajasthan summit organised by the state government to attract domestic and international investment in industry, tourism infrastructure, renewable energy, and services has generated significant investment commitments from major industrial groups, with follow-up mechanisms to translate these commitments into actual project implementation and job creation on the ground.
