Rajasthan's textile and handloom traditions represent one of the richest and most diverse craft heritages in India, reflecting centuries of cultural exchange, artistic innovation, and the extraordinary skill of its artisan communities. The state's textiles are not merely commercial products but expressions of cultural identity, religious symbolism, and aesthetic sensibility that have been shaped by the distinctive geography, climate, and social traditions of the region. Bandhani, the distinctive tie-and-dye fabric tradition, is practised primarily in the Shekhawati region and in Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Jaipur. The technique involves tying small portions of fabric with thread before dyeing, creating patterns of dots, spirals, and geometric shapes in vibrant colours. Skilled bandhani craftswomen can tie thousands of tiny knots in a single garment to create intricate patterns that emerge when the cloth is dyed and the thread removed. Bandhani fabric has received a Geographical Indication tag protecting it as a product of Rajasthan, and it is used in sarees, dupattas, turbans, and other garments. The odhna, a large wrap traditionally worn by Rajasthani women, is often made in bandhani and serves as an important element of traditional female dress across multiple communities. Block printing is another iconic Rajasthan textile tradition with ancient roots and widespread practice. Sanganer, near Jaipur, and Bagru are the two most important centres of block printing. Sanganer is known for its delicate floral prints in white and pastel colours on cotton and silk fabric, traditionally made with natural dyes derived from plants and minerals. Bagru is famous for its bold geometric patterns in earthy tones printed with mud-resist paste. Block printing involves carving intricate designs on wooden blocks that are dipped in colour and stamped by hand onto fabric, a labour-intensive process that requires great skill and precision to ensure registration of multiple colour blocks. Carpet and durrie weaving is a significant economic activity in several districts of Rajasthan, particularly Jaipur, Bikaner, and Barmer. Rajasthan carpets are woven in wool, silk, and combinations, with designs ranging from traditional Persian-influenced floral patterns to bold geometric and tribal motifs. The carpet weaving industry employs large numbers of women, who work either in cooperative weaving centres or at home on looms under a putting-out system facilitated by traders and exporters. Rajasthan carpets are exported to markets in Europe, North America, and the Gulf and have a strong reputation for quality among international buyers. Kota Doria, a distinctive lightweight cotton and silk fabric woven in the Kota and Kaithoon area, is celebrated for its characteristic square check pattern created through the interweaving of cotton and silk threads. The fabric is exceptionally breathable and comfortable, making it ideal for the hot climate of Rajasthan, and has received a GI tag. The sarees and dupattas woven in Kota Doria have been popular among women across India, and efforts have been made to support the artisan community through training, market access, and cluster development. Leheriya, another tie-and-dye technique specific to Rajasthan, creates diagonal or chevron stripe patterns through a distinctive rolling and dyeing method. Leheriya turbans and sarees in the distinctive pattern are associated with festive occasions and are particularly in demand during the monsoon season and festivals. The state government's One District One Product scheme has highlighted several of these textile traditions as flagship products of their respective districts and provided support for artisan training, cluster development, and market promotion. The Rajasthan government's support for craft clusters, participation in craft fairs and exhibitions, and provision of design inputs through institutes such as the National Institute of Fashion Technology has helped artisan communities adapt traditional designs to contemporary market preferences.
