Higher education in Rajasthan encompasses a large network of universities, colleges, and technical institutions that serve hundreds of thousands of students and play a central role in developing the state's human capital. The Rajasthan Public Service Commission is the principal agency responsible for recruiting officers and teachers for state government services and educational institutions, conducting competitive examinations that determine entry into various state government positions including civil services, educational services, and technical services. The RPSC was established in 1949 and operates under the provisions of the Indian Constitution that mandate the establishment of public service commissions for transparent and merit-based public employment. It conducts examinations including the Rajasthan Administrative Service examination, the Rajasthan Police Service examination, examinations for school lecturers and headmasters, and examinations for various technical and specialised posts. The University of Rajasthan, established at Jaipur in 1947 as the University of Rajputana, is the oldest and most prominent university in the state. The university has a large campus in the heart of Jaipur and is affiliated with hundreds of colleges spread across several districts of the state. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across arts, science, commerce, law, social sciences, and other disciplines and has faculties for research and doctoral programmes. The university has produced distinguished alumni who have contributed to national life in diverse fields. Maharaja Ganga Singh University in Bikaner, Jai Narain Vyas University in Jodhpur, Mohanlal Sukhadia University in Udaipur, and the Rajasthan University of Health Sciences in Jaipur are among the other prominent state universities. Technical education in Rajasthan is coordinated through the Board of Technical Education Rajasthan for diploma programmes and through various engineering colleges and technical universities for degree programmes. The Rajasthan Technical University, established in 2006, is the affiliating university for engineering and technical institutions across the state. Several Indian Institutes of Technology have been established or are under establishment in Rajasthan, with IIT Jodhpur being the most prominent, offering undergraduate and postgraduate engineering and science programmes of national repute. The Central University of Rajasthan is a centrally funded institution that provides quality higher education with support from the Government of India. Medical education is provided through government medical colleges in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Ajmer, Bikaner, Udaipur, Kota, and other cities, as well as through a growing number of private medical colleges. The Rajasthan University of Health Sciences regulates medical and paramedical education in the state. Dental, nursing, pharmacy, and allied health sciences education has also expanded significantly, though quality regulation remains a challenge. The state has established a network of government engineering colleges across the district headquarters to make technical education accessible to students from rural backgrounds who cannot afford to study in private colleges in large cities. The engineering college affiliated to Rajasthan Technical University in virtually every district headquarters reflects the state government's commitment to widening access to technical education. Private sector participation in higher education has grown enormously, with numerous private universities and colleges operating under the Rajasthan Private Universities Act. The quality of private institutions varies widely, from high-quality institutions offering programmes at par with the best in the country to institutions that prioritise enrolment over educational quality. The Higher Education Department and regulatory bodies work to maintain minimum quality standards through periodic inspections, accreditation requirements, and enforcement action against substandard institutions.
