The famous Palace on Wheels is perhaps Rajasthan's most celebrated tourist train and has been instrumental in promoting the state's heritage tourism internationally. Operated jointly by the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation and Indian Railways, the Palace on Wheels offers a seven-night circuit across Rajasthan's major heritage destinations including Jaipur, Sawai Madhopur, Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bharatpur, and Agra in luxury coaches that evoke the style of the former royal carriages of the princely states. The train has been consistently ranked among the world's leading luxury travel experiences and has brought international media attention to Rajasthan's tourism potential. The Royal Rajasthan on Wheels is another luxury heritage train operating in Rajasthan, offering a similar circuit with a different complement of destinations. These heritage trains have been important in positioning Rajasthan as a luxury destination and attracting high-spending international tourists. The expansion of rail connectivity to tourist destinations that are currently poorly served by railways is a priority. The Medta-Merta Bypass and several other new rail lines have been planned to improve connectivity. The development of rail connectivity to the new Greenfield Jaipur International Airport at Sanganer and the planned new airport at other locations is being pursued. Rail freight has been important for Rajasthan's mining and industrial sectors, with large volumes of minerals, chemicals, and agricultural produce moved by rail. The Dedicated Freight Corridor Western line passes through Rajasthan, and the development of logistics parks and multimodal logistics hubs along this corridor is expected to significantly benefit the state's industrial and trading activities. The Indian Railways has been working to improve the condition of stations in Rajasthan through the redevelopment programme, with several major stations including Jaipur Junction, Jodhpur, and Udaipur being planned for comprehensive redevelopment that will improve passenger amenities, add commercial spaces, and integrate multimodal connectivity. Station redevelopment projects will transform these gateways from merely functional transit points to vibrant commercial and cultural hubs that reflect the character and heritage of their cities.
