The Smart Cities Mission, launched by the Government of India in 2015, has provided an important framework for urban development and technology integration in Indian cities, and Uttar Pradesh has been a significant participant in this initiative with five cities selected under the mission. The selected cities — Lucknow, Agra, Kanpur, Varanasi, and Allahabad (Prayagraj) — are implementing a wide range of projects aimed at improving urban infrastructure, governance, service delivery, and quality of life for their residents. Lucknow's smart city projects have focused on the development of a command and control centre that integrates data from traffic cameras, emergency response systems, and civic infrastructure, allowing city administrators to monitor and respond to situations in real time. Intelligent traffic management systems have been deployed at key intersections, and integrated public transport solutions are being developed. Agra's smart city plan has emphasised tourism infrastructure improvement, heritage conservation, and environmental monitoring, with smart parking solutions and pedestrianisation of areas near key monuments being notable projects. Kanpur's smart city initiatives have included smart road development, smart water supply management, and digital governance solutions. Varanasi's smart city transformation has been perhaps the most visible, with the development of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, smart ghats, and integrated city management systems drawing considerable national attention. Allahabad's plan has incorporated flood management systems, smart water meters, and e-governance platforms. Across all five cities, projects have been implemented through Special Purpose Vehicles, which are separate entities created to plan, appraise, approve, release funds, and implement projects. The smart city framework has also introduced a culture of using data and technology in urban governance, and the experience gained through these projects is shaping how these cities approach future urban planning challenges.
