What is a typing speed test?

A typing speed test measures how many words per minute (WPM) you type accurately. The standard calculation: count all correct characters typed, divide by 5 (average word length), then divide by the number of minutes elapsed. TypingMonk reports both gross WPM (raw speed) and net WPM (after error penalties), along with accuracy percentage and a character-level breakdown.

Typing speed tests are used by employers for pre-employment screening, by students benchmarking their progress, and by professionals maintaining certifications. They are also widely used as a self-improvement tool — tracking WPM over time shows whether practice is working and where improvement is slowing down.

How to improve your typing speed

The most effective method is daily 10–15 minute practice sessions focused on accuracy first. Speed follows accuracy naturally once muscle memory is established; attempting to type faster before accuracy is solid usually reinforces error patterns. Use the medium difficulty 5-minute test as your primary benchmark and take it three times per week to track your trend.

Common bottlenecks include weak left-hand ring and little fingers (which cover E, D, C, W, S, X keys on QWERTY), slow shift key technique (always use the opposite hand's shift for a letter), and looking at the keyboard. Identifying and drilling your specific weak keys — visible in TypingMonk's per-character error breakdown — is far more efficient than general typing practice alone.
