The Australian Federal Police is the national law enforcement agency of the Commonwealth of Australia, responsible for enforcing Commonwealth criminal law, protecting Commonwealth interests, and providing a range of policing services under contract to the Australian Capital Territory and to international partners under bilateral and multilateral arrangements. The AFP's investigative functions address a broad range of serious and complex federal crimes including terrorism and violent extremism, espionage and foreign interference, serious organised crime including drug importation and trafficking, people smuggling and human trafficking, cybercrime, financial crime including money laundering and fraud against the Commonwealth, and child protection and exploitation offences. Terrorism investigations are among the most resource-intensive and technically complex activities of the AFP, involving coordinated efforts with domestic intelligence agencies including the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation and with international counterparts through bilateral and multilateral law enforcement cooperation arrangements. International liaison is a significant component of AFP operations, with Federal Agent positions attached to Australian embassies and high commissions in key partner countries, facilitating the exchange of information, evidence, and investigative assistance that is essential to addressing the transnational nature of serious organised crime and terrorism. Policing services provided to the Australian Capital Territory under a community policing arrangement involve the AFP performing the functions that state and territory police forces perform elsewhere in Australia, including response to crime, traffic enforcement, community engagement, and the investigation of local criminal matters. The AFP contributes to international peacekeeping and capacity building through its deployment of officers to multilateral missions in the Pacific region and other areas where Australia has strategic and humanitarian interests, working alongside military and civilian colleagues to build policing capability and support the rule of law.
