The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban is being comprehensively implemented across all urban local bodies in Uttar Pradesh, including municipal corporations, municipal councils, and nagar panchayats, with the objective of ensuring that every eligible urban household belonging to the economically weaker section and low income group categories has access to a pucca dwelling with basic amenities by the target year. Beneficiaries under the Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme component receive an interest subsidy on their home loans from banks and housing finance companies, which reduces the effective equated monthly instalment payable by the borrower and makes home ownership financially viable for families who could not otherwise afford to borrow at market interest rates. The scheme also provides central assistance for in-situ rehabilitation of slum dwellers on the land where they currently live, working with private developers who build new housing on the land in return for the right to develop additional floors for market sale. A fourth component supports affordable housing construction by private and public developers in partnership arrangements with state and local governments. Eligible families must not own a pucca house anywhere in the country, must belong to the specified income categories as determined by the annual household income criteria, and must not have previously availed of housing assistance from any central government scheme. Applications are submitted online through the Awaas portal and verified by urban local bodies before forwarding to the state nodal agency for approval and subsidy disbursement.
