The Uttar Pradesh Police has undergone significant modernisation in recent years aimed at transforming it into a more responsive, technologically equipped, and citizen-friendly force. As the largest state police force in India, the UP Police faces unique challenges given the state's massive population, diverse geography, and complex law and order dynamics. The DIAL 112 emergency response system, modelled on the best practices of emergency services, has been a flagship initiative in this modernisation drive. Under this system, a single number, 112, serves as the emergency helpline for police, fire, and medical emergencies, replacing the previous fragmented system of separate numbers for different services. The state has established a network of Police Response Vehicles, equipped with GPS tracking and radio communication, that are deployed strategically across districts to minimise response times. The integrated command and control centres in district headquarters monitor the movement of PRVs and coordinate response to emergency calls in real time. The system has significantly improved the police's ability to respond to crimes and emergencies, and data from the 112 system is also used to analyse crime patterns and allocate resources more effectively. The UP Police has also invested in upgrading its communications infrastructure, equipping officers with smartphones linked to a secure police communication network that enables sharing of crime data, photographs, and documents in real time. Closed circuit television camera networks have been expanded in major cities for surveillance and crime investigation. Forensic laboratories have been upgraded to enable faster processing of evidence. Training infrastructure has been improved, with new police training colleges and upgraded curricula that include modules on human rights, community policing, gender sensitisation, and cyber crime investigation. The Anti-Terrorism Squad has been strengthened with modern equipment and training. Women safety initiatives including the Mission Shakti programme have deployed specialised teams for investigation of crimes against women.
