Uttar Pradesh has witnessed a transformative expansion of its road and expressway network over the past decade, fundamentally altering the state's economic geography and connectivity. The most celebrated of these projects is the Purvanchal Expressway, a three hundred forty kilometre six-lane access-controlled highway that connects Lucknow to Ghazipur, passing through the districts of Barabanki, Amethi, Sultanpur, Faizabad, Ambedkar Nagar, Azamgarh, Mau, and Ghazipur. Inaugurated in 2021, the Purvanchal Expressway has significantly reduced travel time between Lucknow and the eastern parts of the state and is expected to catalyse industrial and agricultural development in the historically underserved Purvanchal region. The expressway features an airstrip at Sultanpur that can be used for emergency landings by military aircraft, a feature that has also been demonstrated through successful test landings. The Agra-Lucknow Expressway, spanning three hundred two kilometres, was one of the first major expressway projects in Uttar Pradesh and set a benchmark for infrastructure development in the state. It connects the historic city of Agra with the state capital Lucknow, passing through districts including Firozabad, Mainpuri, Etawah, Auraiya, Kannauj, Unnao, and Lucknow. The expressway was constructed in a record time of approximately twenty-two months and has spurred the development of logistics parks, warehousing facilities, and industrial clusters along its corridor. The Bundelkhand Expressway, covering two hundred ninety-six kilometres, serves the seven districts of the Bundelkhand region which have historically struggled with economic backwardness. The Gorakhpur Link Expressway and the Ganga Expressway, currently under various stages of planning and construction, will further enhance the state's connectivity. These expressways are integral to the state government's vision of positioning Uttar Pradesh as a premier investment destination and improving the quality of life for its citizens by reducing commute times and improving access to markets.
