The Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, located in Lucknow and commonly known as SGPGI, is one of India's premier tertiary and quaternary care medical institutions, established by an act of the Uttar Pradesh State Legislature to provide highly specialised healthcare services and postgraduate medical education of international standard to the people of the state and the surrounding region. The institute draws patients from across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, and even from Nepal and other neighbouring countries, many of them having exhausted the available treatment options at district and divisional hospitals before being referred to SGPGI for specialist intervention. The institute houses dedicated departments and centres of excellence in disciplines including nephrology and kidney transplantation, hepatology and liver transplantation, cardiology and cardiac surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery, oncology and bone marrow transplantation, and several other specialties, all of them conducting complex procedures at levels of quality and volume that compare favourably with the best institutions in the country. Postgraduate and superspecialty degree and diploma programmes at SGPGI train doctors who go on to staff specialist departments across the country, contributing to the overall quality of specialist medical care available at state and district hospitals. The institute has established an online OPD registration and appointment system that allows patients and their attendants to book appointments in advance, reducing the time spent in queues and improving the orderly functioning of the outpatient department that sees several thousand patients on working days.
