The Ganga Expressway is one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects currently under development in Uttar Pradesh and is set to become the longest expressway in India upon completion. Spanning approximately five hundred ninety-four kilometres, the six-lane access-controlled expressway will run from Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh to Prayagraj in the east, passing through the districts of Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rai Bareli, Pratapgarh, and Prayagraj. The project is being implemented by the Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority, which has extensive experience in executing large-scale expressway projects in the state. The Ganga Expressway will significantly reduce the travel time between Meerut and Prayagraj, creating a high-speed corridor that connects the western and eastern parts of the state. The expressway is being developed with an airstrip section that can serve as an emergency military landing strip, reflecting the defence dimensions that have been incorporated into several of UP's recent expressway projects. The project has involved large-scale land acquisition across multiple districts, and the state government has made efforts to provide fair compensation and rehabilitation support to affected landowners and tenants. The development of industrial corridors along the expressway is a key part of the overall development strategy, with the government planning to attract investments in logistics, warehousing, food processing, and manufacturing to areas served by the new highway. The expressway is expected to catalyse economic development in the mid-Gangetic plains districts that it traverses, many of which have historically lagged behind in industrial investment and employment generation. Alongside the main expressway, service roads and ancillary infrastructure including fuel stations, rest areas, and emergency facilities are being developed to ensure safe and convenient travel.
